Heavy Duty Mechanic/Supervisor

Position Summary

Reporting to the Foreman, the Heavy Duty Mechanic/Supervisor is responsible for regular maintenance and repair of all mining equipment to enable production and quality by ensuring the safe and efficient operation of multiple pieces of equipment, machinery and trucks used in a surface mining camp setting. Must have experience and familiarity with a diverse range of heavy equipment including, but not limited to: Dozers, Loaders, Excavators, Compactors, Rock Trucks, Zoom Booms, Skid Steers, Light Vehicle, Light Plants, Water Pumps, Compressors and Generators. Responsible for the management and supervision of the mechanic shop and all personnel working within the mechanic shop.

General Duties

Heavy Duty Mechanic/Supervisor duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair large mobile mining equipment common to a surface mine & ensuring operation by completing preventative maintenance requirements
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions or determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices
  • Maintain and analyze predictive maintenance data
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists, cranes, hand and power tools
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear & repair and replace damaged or worn parts
  • Schedule maintenance for heavy equipment and industrial machines, and keep equipment service records
  • Follow lock out and tag out procedures
  • Fit bearings to adjust, repair or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • Weld or solder broken parts and structural members using electric or gas welders and soldering tools
  • Adjust and maintain industrial machinery using control and regulating devices
  • Fabricate needed parts or items from sheet metal
  • Responsible for the management and supervision of the mechanic shop and all personnel working within the mechanic shop
  • Know and comply with all WorkSafe BC regulations and occupational health and safety requirements
  • Ensure the health and safety of all workers under your direct supervision
  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company's safety program and environmental rules and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture
  • Complete other tasks as required


  • Valid Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson's Heavy Duty Mechanic or Heavy Duty Technician Qualification
  • Class 5 Drivers License or higher
  • Five years' experience maintaining/repairing mobile mining equipment is required
  • Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals relating to manufacturer specifications and warranty
  • Must have demonstrated ability to effectively diagnose, troubleshoot and repair issues in mechanical systems common to mining and/or construction equipment products
  • Ability to troubleshoot hydraulic and electrical faults using schematics
  • Experience using Micrometers to measure tight tolerances
  • Experience working in a surface mining camp setting
  • Ability to determine and document root cause failure
  • Prepared to discuss complex problems and solutions in a team environment
  • Ability to manage and supervise employees under your area of supervision
  • Knowledge of the Worksafe BC requirements that apply to the work under your area of supervision

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which includes wide variations in weather such as extreme cold, heat and humidity; and, exposure to dust
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required
  • Must comply with company's drug and alcohol testing requirements
